Redmen Basketball Priorities

A note from Coach DeAveiro:

Dear alumni and friends,

McGill is unique with its emphasis on buidling the total student athlete who excels both in the classroom and on the basketball court, which makes our goal to be recognized as one of the top five basketball programs in the country all the more challenging. That said, we are proud of the academic and athletic accomplishments of our players who understand the importance of combining sports and school.

During my tenure at McGill our alumni and friends have embraced our program and have played a major part in our recent success. The sport of basketball continues to grow across our country and more and more universities have identified basketball as one of the prime sports. Our Athletic department strives for excellence and has done a great job providing the necessary resources, yet it is the partnership of alumni, friends and supporters that has been the secret to our success.

Our Fundraising Priorities

We have identified the following three priorities as key to our future success:

  •  Athletic Financial Awards - $30,000
Our current scholarship pool helps us recruit the best players in the country.  To field a competitive team we need to fund 8.5 scholarship players to have the necessary depth to compete for a national championship.

  • Exhibition/Out of Season Travel Schedule - $25,000
Our athletes tipped off against Indiana in August this year as part of our annual pre-season commitment to NCAA games. This early start meant our athletes arrived before school started paying out of pocket for meals and early entrance to residence.

The Quebec conference's biggest challenge remains the fact that it consists of only five teams who play each other four times in regular season.  Therefore it's crucial that we put together the best exhibition schedule possible competing against the best teams outside Quebec.  We feel that two out of province tournaments, as well as the annual McGill Redbird Classic, provides a competitive exhibition experience that helps sell the McGill brand of basketball across the country.

December proves to be a challenging month for our team, losing approximately a month of training due to exams. We strive to bring our athletes back just after Christmas for a training camp that is instrumental in getting off to the right foot for the second half of the season. This year's trip to New York allowed us to get back into game shape and re-establish our team bonds.

  • Program Branding & Miscellaneous Expenses - $6,000
Our athletes incur many expenses throughout the basketball season, including post-game meals when traveling, the purchase of athletic clothing (tracksuit, shirts, shoes, McGill ties) and tickets to the end of  year banquet. It costs approximately $250 per player to outfit them in our Adidas package.
